Strengthening global electrical safety: JASANZ at the IECEE 2025 Meeting
- Author: JASANZ
IECEE 2025 Annual Meeting
Last week, JASANZ proudly represented Australia at the 2025 IECEE Annual Certification Management Committee meeting (IECEE CMC) in Finland.
Hosted by SGS Fimko Ltd, at the historic Helsinki Congress Paasitorni building, built in 1908, the event also marked the 40th anniversary of the IECEE Conformity Assessment Systems.
Our Role as Australia’s IECEE Member Body
One of the more surprising aspects of JASANZ’s diverse work is our role serving as an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Member Body for Australia across the four conformity assessment systems (CA Systems). This appointment comes through the IEC Australian National Committee, Standards Australia.
Key highlights
IEC address
The IEC President Jo Cops gave an address to the delegates, encouraging us to redouble our efforts to enhance the value and proposition of the IECEE Conformity Assessment System by linking it to addressing the global challenges such as creating sustainable, human-centred technology.
Australian policy updates
As member body, JASANZ delivered an update on Australian public policy discussions regarding electrical equipment certification, including the Department of Finance’s Review of the Regulatory Framework for the Safety of Household Electrical Products and the Productivity Commission’s Competition Policy Analysis.
The big picture
In a world where industries are becoming increasingly specialised, JASANZ stands out by taking a broad view and connecting different sectors together.
When industry and government approach JASANZ for advice, they know they will receive well-informed, comprehensive information on their full range of options and guidance on how these can be combined to achieve the desired goal within a given industry or opportunity.
All systems have strengths and limitations, and by acknowledging and being transparent about them, JASANZ and its global counterparts remain relevant and competitive as leaders in quality, improvement and industrial policy.
International connections
We also connected with Malaysia’s Suruhanjaya Tenaga Energy Commission, learning about their recent discussions with Energy Safe Victoria on battery standards.
Looking forward
Speaking of energy regulators in Australia…! We are excited to resume work on the proposed harmonised public electrical safety scheme for Australia and New Zealand through the JASANZ Electrical Equipment Safety Certification Scheme (EESC) Technical Committee, members of whom includes electrical safety regulators of Australia and New Zealand.
This scheme builds on our IECEE Member Body insights and complements the IECEE CB Scheme, as well as incorporating requirements for Schemes and Scheme Owners under new mandatory International Accreditation Forum documents.
Thank you, Markus and SGS Fimko for your warm hospitality during this milestone anniversary celebration. JASANZ’s work is diverse, covering accreditation, agreement groups and technical advice under the authority of two national governments. Our government and industry stakeholders are often surprised by the breadth of our involvement, and our presence at events like the IECEE CMC shows our commitment to maintaining Australia’s voice in global electrical safety standards.
