The safety net behind every call—including 000

  • Author: JASANZ

When you dial triple-zero, you’d expect your call to connect.
No delays. No failures.

But what makes that possible?

TECS, the Telecommunications Equipment Certification Scheme, is Australia’s national framework that makes sure your telecommunications devices are safe, reliable and ready to perform.

It was developed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) in consultation with JASANZ and others, to support both safety and performance across the industry.

ACMA reported that over 9.4 million calls were made to triple zero between 2018-2019 which gives a true sense of this vital service that TECS helps support.

How TECS protects you

Every time you pick up your phone, plug in a charger, or connect to the network, TECS is working behind the scenes to keep you and the system safe.

Access to emergency services: TECS makes sure your device can connect to emergency services when you call 000.

Protecting national infrastructure: TECS stops low-quality telecommunications devices from entering the Australian market. Poorly designed or substandard equipment can interfere with or even damage the shared infrastructure we all rely on.

Keeping unsafe devices out of your home: From overheating chargers to faulty modems, TECS helps prevent dangerous products from being sold in Australia.

The role of JASANZ in device safety

JASANZ accredits the organisations that certify, test and inspect telecommunications equipment. We make sure they are qualified, independent and trustworthy.

Any organisation working under the Telecommunications Equipment Certification Scheme (TECS) must first be accredited by JASANZ and meet both international and Australian safety standards.

Together, TECS and JASANZ help ensure the telecommunications equipment you use every day is safe, reliable and ready to perform so you can always stay connected when it matters most.
