JASANZ at Kava Standards Week with Pacific Islands Forum and Standards Australia

JASANZ attended Kava Standards Week in Sydney, observing the strong regional collaboration alongside Standards Australia and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat. The event brought together 20 experts from nine Pacific Island countries to advance a shared approach to kava quality and safety.

Kava, a traditional beverage derived from the root of the *piper methysticum* plant, is rooted in deep cultural, social and community significance across the Pacific. As international trade expands, the importance of aligned quality and safety standards continues to grow—supporting both market access and community outcomes.

Delivered in partnership with the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the week included the inaugural meeting of the Pacific Islands Standards Committee TC3 Kava Standards, alongside practical capacity‑building workshops. Working alongside Standards Australia and regional stakeholders, JASANZ noted the value of integrating technical standard-setting with capability development to strengthen a fit‑for‑purpose Pacific quality infrastructure.

With the global kava market projected to grow from A$2.1 billion in 2023 to A$7.3 billion by 2032, establishing robust, regionally relevant standards will be critical for sustaining livelihoods and preserving cultural continuity.

It was a privilege to be a part of the collective efforts alongside Standards Australia, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and participating countries in progressing this important work. JASANZ commends the inclusive, Pacific-led Talanoa approach demonstrated throughout the week, and looks forward to continuing to support the development and implementation of quality infrastructure across the region.
