Accredited certification helping to ensure food safety for consumers

According to Food Safety Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) there are on average 79 food recalls Australia and New Zealand per year, and this number has been increasing for the last ten years.

Between 2013 and 2022, FSANZ coordinated 791 recalls including 70 dairy products. The majority of recalls are due to undeclared allergens (44% between 2013 and 2022) and microbial contamination (25% between 2013 and 2022).

Accredited certification can help dairy companies and other food suppliers optimise the conditions under which safe food is provided, as well as minimise the possibility of food non-conformities, increase market share and improve the opportunity for international trade.

The client

Small and medium sized dairy companies.

The objective

To ensure food safety through the effective application of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) management systems and Food Safety Systems (FSS) to control food borne safety hazards, and increase the opportunity for trade and export.

The solution

The certification of Diary Companies to ISO 22000 by an accredited certification body with the independent third party audit of the company management systems and controls that ensure the effective implementation of HACCP.

The outcome

By implementing the HACCP FSS and by being ISO 22000 Food Safety Management certified, the level of the achievement of the HACCP objectives is improved significantly. By seeking to have certification provided by an International Accreditation Forum (IAF) recognised Accreditation Body, the dairy company’s certificate is recognised under IAF Mutual Recognition Arrangements.

Summary

By seeking to achieve accredited certification to ISO 22000 Food Safety Management, dairy companies optimise the conditions under which safe food is provided, minimise the possibility of food non-conformities and scandals, increase market share and improve the opportunity for export and international trade.
