From quality challenges to supply chain confidence

A skyscraper's frame is only as strong as the steel inside it. For the manufacturers supplying that steel, consistency matters. One issue with materials can mean delays, disruption, and a loss of customer trust.

BCD Steelworx Ltd (BCD) manufactures prestressing wire used in high-strength concrete structures across Australia, including high-rise buildings, entertainment venues, and stadiums. BCD stood behind the quality of its own production processes, but inconsistent raw material supply was creating challenges beyond its factory floor.

BCD sourced steel from suppliers across Australia and overseas, and variations in material quality could result in rejected shipments, lengthy negotiations, project delays, and increased pressure on customer relationships. While BCD worked with suppliers to improve consistency, it needed a stronger way to demonstrate the reliability of the materials behind its products.

The solution came through product certification by the Australasian Certification Authority for Reinforcing and Structural Steels (ACRS), a JASANZ-accredited certification body specialising in steel.

ACRS assessed BCD's product against the requirements of AS/NZS 4627 and verified that input materials were sourced from ACRS-certified steel mills. This provided greater assurance over the quality of materials throughout the supply chain.

The results were significant. Within a year of certification, BCD reported a 78% reduction in supplier quality issues, alongside reduced downtime, fewer customer returns, and renewed confidence from customers.

By introducing accredited certification into its supply chain, BCD strengthened its quality controls, demonstrated product reliability, and improved its position in the Australian construction market.
