The accreditation process

From enquiry to accreditation

JASANZ accreditation follows a staged process, with defined requirements at each stage. Explore the steps from your initial enquiry through to the accreditation decision.

Step by step

The JASANZ accreditation process

Understand what to prepare, what happens during assessment and what to expect once accreditation is granted.

Stage one

Initial enquiry

The first step is understanding whether JASANZ accreditation is the right for your organisation and the activities you carry out.

Provide details about your organisation, intended accreditation scope and any relevant standards to help the JASANZ team understand your requirements. We’ll review your enquiry and provide information on the relevant accreditation scheme, standard and what the process may involve.

What to have ready

  • Description of your activities

  • Intended scope of accreditation

  • Relevant standards (if known)

  • Geographic locations of operations

Stage two

Formal application

Once the relevant accreditation scheme has been identified, the next step is to submit a formal application. This defines the proposed scope of accreditation, including the activities, test methods, measurement ranges or product types being assessed, along with information about your operations, personnel and supporting systems.

JASANZ reviews the application for completeness and confirms fees based on the scope and complexity of the assessment. Applications should be submitted when the systems and processes needed to meet the relevant requirements are already in place. Accreditation is not a starting point for building them.

Preparing your application

  • Review the Accreditation Manual and applicable requirements

  • Confirm your proposed scope of accreditation

  • Prepare the required documentation and supporting evidence

  • Complete and sign the Applicants Deed

  • Submit your application through the portal

  • Pay the application fee

Stage three

Document review

Before the assessment takes place, JASANZ reviews the documentation provided as part of your application. This includes the systems, procedures, records and technical information relevant to the proposed scope of accreditation.

The purpose is to identify any significant gaps between your documentation and the requirements of the relevant standard before assessment. If there are material gaps, JASANZ will advise you so they can be addressed before the assessment is scheduled. This saves time for everyone.

Document typically reviewed

  • Documented processes and procedures

  • Records demonstrating how requirements are being met

  • Information about personnel competence and responsibilities

  • Information about facilities, equipment and resources

  • Internal review and improvement records

Stage four

On-site technical assessment

During the assessment, JASANZ technical assessors visit your facilities to evaluate how your systems and processes operate in practice. The assessment focuses on technical competence, with assessors reviewing relevant documentation, observing activities, examining equipment and records, and speaking with personnel involved in the work.

JASANZ assessors are technical experts with knowledge relevant to the scope being assessed. Their expertise allows them to evaluate whether the required technical capabilities, processes and controls are in place.

At the conclusion of the assessment, the assessor holds a closing meeting to discuss the findings, including any non-conformances, and outline the next steps.

What assessors may evaluate

  • How work is performed in practice

  • Staff knowledge and competence

  • Processes, procedures and supporting systems

  • Facilities, equipment and resources

  • Records and reporting

  • Impartiality and independence

Stage five

Corrective actions and resolution

Following the assessment, JASANZ provides a report outlining the findings. Where non-conformances are identified, you will need to address them by investigating the cause, taking corrective action and providing evidence that the issue has been resolved.

JASANZ reviews the responses and supporting evidence to determine whether the findings have been satisfactorily addressed. Additional information or a follow-up assessment may be required, depending on the nature of the findings.

Stage six

Accreditation decision and certificate

If accreditation is granted, you'll receive a JASANZ accreditation certificate and scope of accreditation, and be listed on the publicly accessible JASANZ register.

Accreditation demonstrates that your organisation has been independently assessed and recognised as competent in its field, providing confidence to customers, regulators and stakeholders. Ongoing surveillance assessments help maintain confidence in your accredited status.

What you receive

  • Accreditation certificate

  • Scope of accreditation

  • JASANZ register listing
